Custom Rules

Define your own compliance rules in plain English.

Custom Rules

Custom rules let you define your own compliance checks in plain English, alongside the built-in bar advertising rules. Available on Agency plans and above.

Creating a custom rule

Navigate to Rules in the sidebar. The Custom Rules section appears below the system compliance rules. Each custom rule has:

  • Name — A short descriptive name for the rule
  • Description — A plain-English description of what to check for. Write it as you would explain it to a colleague.
  • Jurisdictions — Which jurisdictions this rule applies to
  • Auto-apply — When enabled, the rule applies to all URLs automatically. When disabled, you can assign it to specific pages.

Example custom rules

Here are some examples of effective custom rules:

  • "The website must include the firm's physical office address on every page that mentions the firm name."
  • "Any mention of case results must include a disclaimer stating that past results do not guarantee future outcomes."
  • "Attorney bios must not use the word 'expert' or 'specialist' unless the attorney holds a certified specialization."
  • "All testimonials must clearly identify them as testimonials and include a disclaimer."

Assigning rules to specific pages

If auto-apply is disabled, you can assign the custom rule to specific pages from the page detail view. This is useful for rules that only apply to certain types of pages (e.g., testimonial pages, attorney bios).

How custom rules are checked

During a scan, custom rules are included alongside the system bar advertising rules in the AI analysis. The AI evaluates your page content against both rule sets and reports violations with the type "custom rule violation."
