Compliance Rules
Understand the bar advertising rules BarGuard checks against.
Compliance Rules
BarGuard maintains a comprehensive database of state bar advertising rules that the AI uses to analyze your pages.
How rules work
Each jurisdiction (e.g., Florida, California, New York) has its own set of bar advertising rules covering areas like:
- Required disclosures — Information that must be present on attorney websites
- Prohibited content — Claims or language that violates bar rules
- Conditional content — Content that's only allowed under certain conditions (e.g., disclaimers for testimonials)
Viewing your rules
Navigate to Rules in your workspace sidebar to see all active rules organized by jurisdiction. Each rule includes:
- Rule title and description
- Category (required disclosure, prohibited content, or conditional content)
- Citation to the specific bar rule
- Severity hint indicating the typical severity when violated
Enabling and disabling rules
You can toggle individual rules on or off for your firm. Disabled rules will not be checked during scans. This is useful if a rule doesn't apply to your practice area or if you've confirmed with your bar association that it's not relevant.

Jurisdictions
Your firm's target jurisdictions determine which rule sets are applied during scans. You can change your jurisdictions in Settings under your workspace configuration. Individual pages can also have jurisdiction overrides — for example, if a specific landing page targets a different state.
